To mark World Youth Skills Day on 15 July 2021, The Market Access Upgrade Programme (MARKUP Kenya) – a regional development initiative in the East African Community funded by the European Union, announced the winners of MARKUP Photography Contest 2021.
Entries were invited from young photographers to capture themes across six categories: Value Chains, Quality Infrastructure, Food Safety, Trade, Women in Agriculture, and Youth in Agriculture. From a total of 413 entries from 42 individuals, only 10% were shortlisted for final selection. Two of the categories, Quality Infrastructure and Food Safety did not receive satisfactory entries. This was attributed to a lack of understanding of the concepts they represent and lack of access to facilities in the case of the Quality infrastructure category. The two categories remain open and MARKUP will issue a call for participation in August.
Cash prizes worth Ksh 25,000 each were awarded to the 3 category winners, with the Overall Winner Joseph Mahinda of Nyeri County receiving Ksh 100,000/-
The winning images were selected based on the degree to which the images conveyed the category theme and the overall visual impact, creativity and originality.
This inaugural event was supported by UNIDO, Fresh Produce Exporters Association of Kenya (FPEAK), Fresh Produce Consortium of Kenya (FPC), KEPHIS, AFA and KEBS.
